What is commercial endorsement?
If you work on or plan to work on a commercial vessel, then you need to ensure that whatever qualifications you have are officially endorsed by the RYA. Endorsement is essentially a suite of training to ensure you have the required skills to be safe while operating a boat. We run every course you need to get there, all in one place.
Most people begin their commercial endorsement journey with one of two qualifications:
RYA Powerboat Level 2 (Commercially Endorsed)
Work on small commercial vessels under 10 metres, up to 3 miles from shore, during daylight hours.
RYA Advanced Powerboat Certificate of Competence (Exam)
Work on small commercial vessels under 24 metres, up to 20 miles from shore, day or night.
What You Need
In addition to your powerboating certificate, you need the following courses and administrative items to be completed:
Your one stop shop to endorsement
If you’d like to gain a commercial endorsement but haven’t got the required qualifications, we can provide you with all the training you need. You only need to complete those courses which you have not done elsewhere. For example, if you have a PBL2 and a Marine radio qualification, then you don’t need to do them again with us. For those who need to complete all the courses, including powerboating, we run a ‘commercial endorsement’ week once a month. This makes it possible to complete all the required training in one week.
RYA/MCA
First Aid
A one-day course covering drowning, cold water shock, sea sickness, dehydration and hypothermia. Built for anyone who gets afloat, from inland waters to cross-Channel passages. Immediate action at sea can save lives, and this course gives you the confidence to take it.

Sea Survival
This one-day course prepares yachtsmen, crews, skippers and powerboaters for the worst-case scenario: abandoning ship. It's also day one of the two-day ISAF Offshore Safety Crew Course, required for anyone racing offshore in ISAF races.

Short Range Radio (SRC/VHF)
Learn the protocol and practical operation of marine VHF radios over one day, using adapted radios in a classroom setting. The course ends with an exam, which you book directly with the RYA once you've completed the training.
Professional Practices and Responsibilities (PPR)
A compulsory online course for every RYA Commercial Endorsement holder. Whatever your role on the water, you have a duty of care to your crew, your passengers and other water users, and you'll be held to account if things go wrong.

Powerboat Level 2 Workboat
This is the practical starting point for anyone who wants to drive a powerboat safely and confidently. For those working commercially, we tailor the course content to be specific to workboat scenarios.

Advanced Powerboat
For those who have some powerboating experience but wish to either drive larger vessels or travel further from shore at night or day.
The other qualifications you can commercially endorse are: Day Skipper Practical, Yachtmaster Coastal (20 miles from a safe haven), Yachtmaster Off-Shore (150 miles from a safe haven), Yachtmaster Ocean
