Course overview

If you have a VHF radio onboard your boat, or even carry a handheld VHF whilst kayaking or paddle-boarding, you need to hold an operator’s licence. A radio is an important piece of safety equipment on board and it is vital to understand the correct procedures. The Short-Range Certificate is the minimum qualification required by law to control the operation of VHF and VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC) equipment on any British flagged vessel voluntarily fitted with a radio either fixed or hand held.

What you’ll achieve

What do I need to bring?

1 x Passport-sized colour photograph of yourself (For your certificate)

RYA Exam Form printed in landscape orientation. An examination fee is payable to the RYA. Payment details must be completed prior to the commencement of the exam, and the form received via the RYA, printed and brought with you.

A photo ID certificate or card. You will be required to produce a photo ID certificate or card, such as a driving license or passport, to verify your name, age, and that the photograph is a true likeness. This is an RYA requirement; without this, you will not be able to sit your exam.
