Course overview

A focused day of preparation designed to sharpen your skills and build confidence ahead of the RYA Advanced Powerboat Certificate of Competence exam. The session covers advanced boat handling, navigation (day and night), pilotage, and emergency scenarios, with tailored coaching to address individual development needs. Ideal for those looking to fine-tune their knowledge and techniques before assessment.

Course duration: 1 day (Includes a night exercise)

What you’ll learn

Tailored coaching to address individual development needs. Can include:

• Night navigation and passage planning
• Advanced boat handling in challenging conditions
• Navigation at planing speed
• Weather assessment and decision-making
• Search patterns and heavy weather procedures

Prerequisites

None. However, for the RYA Advanced Powerboat Certificate of Competence exam:

• Required certification
  • GMDSS-compliant Marine Radio Operator’s Certificate (e.g. RYA Short Range Certificate)
  • Valid RYA First Aid certificate
  • Advanced Powerboat course completion certificate if claiming reduced sea time

It is highly recommended that you hold a Coastal Skipper Yachtmaster Offshore certificate (although not essential) prior to your exam, as it is unlikely that your theory knowledge will be at the required level to pass the examination without it.

• Required seatime, documented minimum sea time completed on a seagoing powerboat in the last 10 years:
  • 30 days at sea (Reduced to 20 days if an RYA Advanced Powerboat course completion certificate is held)
  • 2 days as skipper
  • 800 miles (Reduced to 400 miles if an RYA Advanced Powerboat course completion certificate is held)
  • 12 night-hours
• Minimum age: 17
